As the cannabis industry continues to grow and evolve, so do the players and voices shaping its narrative.

There are those who work for the greater good of the sector as a whole, and those who focus on individual business successes.

At the CTA, our mandate has always been clear: we represent not just individual businesses but the collective interests of the cannabis and CBD industries in the UK.

Our work is driven by the needs of our members, who are navigating an ever-changing regulatory environment. The CTA focuses on advocating for sensible, evidence-based regulation and representing the voices of hundreds of companies, from small businesses to large enterprises, in an effort to shape a sustainable future for the industry.

In contrast, we occasionally see commentary from some independent operators who work privately for individual companies within the CBD sector. While their work may be beneficial to specific clients, their approach to public discourse sometimes includes disparaging remarks about other trade organisations.

Their messaging often carries a cautious sentiment about to whom one should listen, or even a perceived non-inclusivity, which raises an interesting point. In any industry, trust and credibility are essential. But should trust be placed in those who position themselves by attacking others, attempting to undermine their work and reputation to win over potential clients? Or should it be placed in organisations who advocate for the entire industry and offer guidance and resources to all who share the goal of creating a legitimate, thriving cannabis sector?

The tone in these messages often falls into the realm of negative commentary, akin to schoolyard bullying. It brings to mind the image of small birds in Pixar’s For the Birds, loudly chirping to make themselves heard, yet ultimately contributing little more than noise. They seem to believe that pulling others down elevates their own standing.

At the CTA, we have chosen to take the higher road. We don’t engage in tit-for-tat disputes or attempt to discredit others simply to gain attention. Our focus is, and always will be, on creating a robust, well-regulated market where all businesses, large or small, can thrive. We see the bigger picture, and we understand that divisive tactics don’t serve the long-term interests of the industry or its consumers.

In today’s fast-evolving cannabis sector, businesses and professionals must navigate a complex regulatory landscape. Choosing who to trust with guidance and advice is crucial. We encourage companies to look at the track record and values of those offering advice. Does the organisation have a history of supporting the entire industry, or does it only work in the interests of individual businesses? Do they foster collaboration, or do they spend their time tearing others down?

Ultimately, actions speak louder than words. The CTA will continue to focus on advocating for positive change, working with our members, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders across the industry to shape a future where the cannabis sector can flourish. We’ll leave the schoolyard behaviour to others.

After all, trust isn’t built on who shouts the loudest – it’s built on who stands for something bigger. And that’s what we do at the CTA.
