South Shields Town Hall, a Grade II listed building on Westoe Road, Tyne and Wear, serves as the headquarters of South Tyneside Council. The original town hall, located in the Market Place, was built in 1768 as a manorial courthouse. Its design featured ground-floor arcading for markets, Venetian windows, and a roof-level timber turret. Acquired by South Shields Corporation in 1855, it was repurposed as a town hall but soon proved inadequate.
Efforts to replace it began in 1869 but faced opposition due to cost and location concerns. Plans stalled until the 1880s, and by the 1890s, civic leaders chose a site at the corner of Westoe Road and Beach Road. The foundation stone for the new town hall was laid in 1905, and the building, designed by Ernest Fatch in Edwardian Baroque style, opened in 1910 at a cost of £78,000. The design features a symmetrical frontage with a prominent clock tower rising 46.6 metres, housing bells that play the Westminster Quarters.
A statue of Queen Victoria was installed in 1913, and Queen Elizabeth II visited in 1954. A modern extension was added in 1960, and the building continues to serve as a seat of local government. Statues honouring war heroes were unveiled in 2007.
